Tuff-N-Uff The Future Stars of MMA returns to the Cox Pavilion on August 5th with a thrilling fight card headlined by a Lightweight title fight
Locals Rocky Cantu (12-7 from Xtreme Couture) and Nick Perez (3-2-1 from School of Hard Knocks) will go head to head to determine who is the 155lbs Tuff-N-Uff champion. Both have worked hard to get to this point, and both attribute their success to their coaches.
Rocky Cantu started fighting at the age of 19 while he was going to community college in Michigan. He had wrestled since he was 13 years old and was itching to compete again. After winning his first mixed martial arts fight, he found himself winning three more within a month and a half. He continued his NCAA wrestling career at Olivet College in Olivet, Michigan. During that time, he obtained a Bachelors degree in Fitness Management while fighting in the summers. After college, he moved to Las Vegas where he committed himself to MMA. Though he has many great coaches that should not go unnoticed, he can’t say enough about Dennis Davis. Davis is there at the gym day in and day out grinding with his students, and is always there when Cantu needs him. He has not just been a great coach; but has also been a great friend to Cantu. While Xtreme Couture is one of Cantu’s happy places, the hardest part about fighting, for him, is being away from his family. He’s a country boy that misses fishing and hunting with his family in Michigan. After the fight on August 5th, Cantu has plans to move forward towards a professional MMA career one fight at a time so look out for big things from him!
Nick Perez has been actively fighting for 2 years now. He started when he was 16 years old as a means to keep himself out of trouble. Growing up, he was in and out of homeless shelters and juvenile homes with his brothers. One day he met former Tuff-N-Uff fighter, Jamin Tayaba, who introduced Perez to jiu jitsui and he was hooked. With the help of Tayaba and coach Brian Clements, Perez has found inspiration through fighting. Clements has been like a father figure to Perez and trained with him when no one else wanted to. He says that without that inspiration, he may have ended up in prison like his brothers. After a few more amateur fights, Perez plans to follow the path to a professional MMA career. Keep an eye on this Future Star of MMA!
*Fight card subject to change
Calvin ‘Clark Kent’ Agabin has been fighting since he was 15 when he started in Pankration. From then on, it was the grind of wanting to win, wanting to fight, wanting to push himself to something he never thought he could get into. His goals for the future are to be able to help people, not only learn Jiu Jitsu, but to be able to say they can defend themselves. To be able to help them get over anything they may have to overcome, no matter how big the obstacle. His coaches are literally his family. Dad, Gaspar, and brother, Isaac, as well as other coaches who help him get ready like coach Deutsch to coach Johnny. They all help him by pushing him to get ready for his fights. He’d like to dedicate this fight to everyone fighting cancer, and wants them to know that they can get through it and they can beat it. He’s a young promising fighter that shows a lot of talent and looks to be a Future Star of MMA!
